A good toy lasts a long time if you look after it. The routine is short, and it takes about two minutes.
The manual comes first. Every toy is a little different, so if the instructions say something that isn't here, follow the instructions.
Before you use it
Give it a quick wash with warm water and a mild, unscented soap, or a cleaner made for toys. This removes dust from the box and anything it picked up on the way to you. Dry it with a clean towel.
After you use it
- Check the waterproof rating first. A toy rated for full submersion can go under the tap. A toy that is only splashproof should be wiped, not dunked.
- Wash it with warm water and mild soap, or a toy cleaner. Keep water away from the charging port and the buttons unless the manual says it is safe.
- Rinse off all the soap.
- Dry it completely with a clean towel, then let it air dry. Moisture left on a toy, or in a charging port, causes trouble later.
What to avoid
- Harsh products. Strong detergents, bleach and rough scourers can damage the surface.
- Boiling or the dishwasher, unless the maker says it is fine. Many toys have electronics inside.
- Charging when wet. Make sure the port is dry first, and do not charge a toy near water.
- The wrong lubricant. Water-based lube is safe with most toys, including silicone ones. Silicone-based lube can damage a silicone toy, so check before you use it.
How to store it
Keep it clean, dry and out of direct sun or heat. A soft pouch or its own box works well. Store it where it won't be pressed against other toys, and where nobody else will find it by accident.
When to replace it
If the surface feels sticky, looks cracked or torn, or smells odd after cleaning, it is time to retire it. A damaged toy is harder to keep clean.
